Making Quarter Square Triangle Units

NOTE: Quarter Square Triangle Units are made from two squares of fabric cut 1 1/4" larger than your FINISHED unit will be. For example, if you need a 3" finished unit, you will cut your squares 4 1/4".

Directions:

Cut two different fabrics the size of the finished unit plus
1 1/4". Place them right sides together.

1.With a pencil or chalk, draw a line on the back of the lightest fabric from A to B .

2. Draw a line from C to D

3. Align your 1/4" presser foot against the line A to B and sew first on one side, then the other.

4. With your rotary cutter and ruler, cut from C to D, then, turn your piece and cut from A to B. It is important to cut apart on the unsewn line (C to D) BEFORE you cut apart on the sewn line (A to B).

You now have assembled quarter square triangles. They can be sewn into hourglass blocks or combined with plain triangles for other types of patches.

You can also cut individual quarter square triangles, by not layering the fabric and cutting from
A to B and C to D.
