Ellen
Robinson's charm rug came as a result of several years of collecting 6"
fabric charms from online quilting round robins, which began on Genie.
She started
out by taking 700 of the charms and cutting them down to 4 1/2" squares,
after which she pressed them into prairie points. (In the end, she added
100 more charms to the collection used.) She then took a piece of lightweight
denim, which was about 33" x 23" and trimmed it to an oval.
For
the first round, Ellen placed the triangles on the bottom side of the
denim, with the edges matching up to the denim.... points towards center
and triangles overlapping by about 1/2". She then flipped the triangles
to the "up side" of the denim and sewed again. (The triangles
now pointed outward.) Ellen continued to add rounds until she got to the
center, giving them a little pleat or gather at the curves. In the middle,
when the rounds were closer together than the width of the triangle, she
started to fill them in one at a time.
