QAF Block of the Month

June 2006

30's Floating 4 Patch

6 1/2" (unfinished), 6" (finished)

We are repeating a winning little block that we did back in 2003, but this time, we are offering it in 30's repros with white. Indulge me, I love these clear little bright prints. This will give you all a chance to use some of the 30's stash you probably have left over from making log cabin blocks.

This is meant to be a scrappy block, so you will need 5-6 30's strips and one white fabric for each block. You may make up to 3 alike, then switch the fabrics around, add others, etc., so that if you make many, you will have lots of variety within these little blocks.

You will notice that they are shown set with alternate blocks, but you could set them next to each other as well.

For each block:

Cut from White:
(2) 2" squares

Cut from assorted 30's repros:

(2) 2" squares

(2) 3 1/2" x 2" rectangles

(2) 6 1/2" x 2" rectangles

To Assemble Block: Sew each white square to a 30's square. Press to the darker fabric. Sew these two sets into a 4 patch block, as in the picture above. Press the seam to one side. This block should measure 3 1/2" x 3 1/2". Measure and square it to size before you apply the rectangles.

Sew one 3 1/2" x 2" rectangle to either side of the 4 patch. Press to the rectangle. Sew the two remaining rectangles to the other two sides to finish your block. Your block should measure 6 1/2" square. Square it up and you are finished. Make lots! You might be the lucky winner!!

Here are a couple of setting ideas:
