QAF Block of the Month

February 2005

Diamond in a Square

8 1/2" (unfinished) 8" (finished)

This month's block is the super simple Diamond in a Square block. It uses just two fabrics. For our BOM we will use a medium to large floral center square set on point. The background will be a coordinating green in either a leaf print or a tone on tone (TOT),

You may make up to 3 blocks using the same fabrics. As always, please use washed and pressed quilters quality 100% cotton fabrics.

Cut for each block:

Green background: (2) squares 5 1/4" and cut once on the diagonal

Floral fabric:( 1) 6" square

To assemble block:

Note: handle the diagonally cut pieces carefully so as not to stretch the bias edges. Sewing with these pieces on the bottom helps with that a lot.

Center the long side of one green triangle on one edge of the floral center square, RST and sew, using a 1/4" seam. The triangle's points will extend beyond the square on each wide, approximately 1/2". Eyeball these dog ears so they are the same overhang on each side.

Sew the next green triangle to the opposite side of the floral center square, as before. Carefully press the seams toward the center square. Take care not to stretch during the pressing process.

Using your ruler and rotary cutter, trim the extending points of the triangles even with the edge of the floral square.

Now, sew the remaining triangles to the center square in the same manner as the first two. Press the remaining seams away from the center square.

Using a square-up ruler, trim your block to a perfect 8 1/2" square. Now wasn't that easy?
