QAF Block of the Month

December 2005

Ohio Star

9 1/2" (unfinished)9" (finished)

We are offering a version of Ohio Star for our December 2005 Block of the Month.

For this block you will need some White on White (WOW) fabric for the background and a lovely rich red tone on tone (TOT) for the star points. The center square can be the same red as the points, OR can be a different red TOT.

You may make up to 3 blocks of each group of fabrics for this swap.

Cut for each block:

WOW:

(4) 3 1/2" squares
(2) 4 1/4" squares

RED TOT:

(2) 4 1/4" squares
(1) 3 1/2" square (this is for the center and can be either the star point fabric or another red TOT.

To Assemble Block:

First make the quarter square triangles for the side patches. Layer a WOW and a Red 4 1/4" square, RST. Draw a line diagonally from corner to corner in both directions on the back of the WOW square. Sew 1/4" on both sides of ONE of those diagonal lines. The drawn lines are your cutting lines. Carefully cut apart, cutting first on the line you didn't stitch beside, and then cut apart on that drawn line. You will have 4 units. Press to the dark fabric. Repeat with the other two 4 1/4" squares.

Now lay our your quarter square triangle units so that the triangles go together as in the block picture above. Stitch each pair together with a scant 1/4" seam and press to one side. Using a small square up ruler, square these patches to 3 1/2" square exactly. Line up one of the diagonal seamlines with the diagonal on the square up ruler.

You can now lay these units out with your 3 1/2" squares as in the picture above. Sew them together in rows, pressing each row to the plain square, then sew the rows together. Press and square up to 9 1/2". Now wasn't that easy?

Make lots of Ohio Stars, they are fun and easy to make!!
