QAF Block of the Month

August 2004

Summer

8 1/2" unfinished (8" finished)

Our BOM for August is a block I am calling 'Summer'. I'm challenging you to make blocks that tell what you did this summer, using the fabric to tell the story. The large square is the place to do that! The 'double frame' around two sides will be two fabrics - solids, prints, TOT - your choice that coordinate with your SUMMER print.

Make your blocks bright. Make them pastel. It's all up to you. These are SO easy to make.

Make many!!! Let's have lots of winners this month.

For each block:

Focus fabric: (1) 6 1/2" square

A lighter coordinating fabric: (2) pc. 1 1/2" x 6 1/2" and (2) pc. 1 1/2" square

A darker fabric that coordinates with the first two fabrics: (2) pc. 1 1/2" x 6 1/2" and (2) pc. 1 1/2" square

To Assemble Block:

Stitch a lighter strip to a darker strips, press to the dark. Repeat and set aside. Stitch the lighter and darker 1 1/2" squares together in the same way, press and then sew these two pieces into a little 4-patch.

Now comes the fun part....decide whether the darker or lighter of the fabrics looks best next to your focus fabric. Sew one of the longer strip sets to one side of the 6 1/2" square. Lay out the other strip set in that same manner (lighter or darker to the focus square, but don't sew it on yet. Attach the 4-patch to the end of the strip set, being sure to turn it so the fabrics alternate as in the picture above. Stitch this piece on to the square with the other strips attached, and your block is done!
