Holiday Star

December  2001

12" x 12" finished size (12 1/2" x 12 1/2" unfinished)

For the holiday season….Red and Green of course, but not necessarily Christmas prints.  Use a white on white for the background.

Center Square:
Cut 1 square Green 4 3/4"
Cut 2 squares White 3 7/8" and divide diagonally
into 4 triangles.

Sew these 4 triangles to each of the sides of the medium square.  Square this unit up to 6 1/2".

Side units (flying geese units)
Cut four 6 1/2" x 3 1/2" rectangles of White and eight 3 1/2" x   3 1/2" squares of Red

To Make Quick Flying Geese Units:

Place a square on top of one of the rectangles, right sides together, matching outside edges.  Stitch diagonally across square from corner to corner (dotted line on figure),  Cut on solid line, approximately 1/4" from the stitching line.  Press triangle out.

Place a second square of fabric on the other side of the rectangle, again matching outside edges.  Stitch diagonally across square, trim and press to finish flying geese unit.

After you have pressed out the flying geese units, square them up to 6 1/2" x 3 1/2"

Corner squares
Cut four 3 1/2" squares of White.

Using the color illustration as a guide, assemble the units into the block by sewing a corner square to each end of two of the flying geese units.  Then sew the remaining two flying geese units to opposite sides of the center square.  Assemble the resulting 3 strips into the block.
