Scrappy Double Four Patch Block

Fabric:

For 1 Block: Cut:
(4) 3" squares of assorted purple fabrics
(4) 3" squares of muslin or cream fabrics
(2) 5 ½" squares of muslin or cream fabrics

To Assemble Block: Sew each 3" purple square to a 3" cream square and press to the darker fabric. Sew each resulting rectangle to another, following the picture. Press seam. Your 4 patch should measure 5 ½" square. Sew each 4 patch to a plain 5 ½" square, press seam to plain square. Sew the resulting rectangle to another, following the picture. Press.

NOTES: 1) Sew with scant ¼" seam. 2) Measure finished block; it should measure 10 ½" square before mailing in a swap.

For those who would like to make many blocks, to add to your 'win' or to make a whole quilt:

Fabric:

For multiple blocks:
Cut 3" strips of purples (your scraps/strips can be from 6 ½" to 20" in length)
Cut 3" strips of creams (your scraps/strips can be from 6 ½" to 20" in length)
Cut 5 ½" strips of creams full width of fabric;
crosscut to 5 ½" square

 

To Assemble: (for multiple blocks) sew each purple strip to a cream strip. Press to darker strip. Cross cut strip set at 3" intervals. Sew two such strips together into Four-patches. Sew each Four Patch to plain 5 ½" square as above.

Here are a couple of setting examples:

The first one is sashed with sashing cut to 2" with cornerstones.

The second one is set like this:
