QAF Block of the Month
May 2010
Red & White Broken Dishes
8 1/2" (unfinished), 8" (finished)

We are bringing back an old traditional and favorite block this month. And, we are doing it in two colors - red and white. Two color quilts are also very traditional and we thought it was time to do one again. We are calling for TOT reds (tone on tone, no other colors) and plain white or WOW.
You may use just one red per block, or you may use two, like the block above. You may use whatever white you use for all your entries.
Did you know that if you set these blocks side by side in a straight set you get a secondary pattern (pinwheel), which makes it hard to see where each block begins and ends.
I have shown a setting with setting squares, which makes them look very different, but is a way to use fewer blocks.
Cut for each block:
White: (2) 5" squares
Red: (2) 5" squares - you can use two different fabrics if you like
To Assemble Block:
Make half-square triangles (HST): Mark a diagonal line from corner to corner on the back of each white square. Place one white square, right sides together (RST) with each red square and stitch a scant 1/4" on each side of the drawn line. Cut these apart on the drawn line, and you have your HSTs. Press open so that the seam allowances lie to the red side. Square these up to 4 1/2" square.
If you have used two red fabrics, place them opposite each other in your blocks, laying them out as in the block above. Stitch the top two together, then the bottom two. Press the seams so that they will be opposite to each other when you sew that last seam together. Stitch and then press. Square up to 8 1/2"
Good luck in the BOM lottery!!
