QAF Block of the Month

Poppy

7 1/2" (unfinished), 7" finished)

Here's a beautiful Poppy block for Spring. You might remember it from late 2004 when we called it Oriental Poppy.

You can make these any clear bright color. You will need a bit of white or WOW for the corners, a bit of yellow for the center, a solid black for the cross...and some clear colors....reds, pinks, blues, yellows, purples, etc., for the flowers. (Please, no dull or greyed tones for these beauties.) You can use the same black, yellow and cream for as many blocks as you make.

Each flower's petals should be two tones of one color, as depicted in the blocks shown. Use your favorites, you might be a winner! Tone on Tones for these are best, like fossil ferns, marbles and BATIKS!!! Think red poppies, pink poppies, peachy poppies, orange poppies, etc.

Cut for each block:

(2) 4" squares of one shade of a clear colored fabric
(2) 4" squares of a darker shade of the same colored fabric

(1) 1 1/2" square of yellow TOT or solid fabric
(4) 1 1/2" squares of white or WOW fabric
(4) 1 1/2" x 3 1/2" pc. of black solid fabric

To Assemble Block:
Layer a lighter and a darker 4" square RST, mark a diagonal line on the back of one of them, corner to corner. Stitch 1/4" on either side of the line. Cut apart on the drawn line and press each half-square triangle to the darker shade. Repeat for the other pair. Trim these HST to 3 1/2" square.

Lay out your 'flower' per the block pictured above, with a black strip between two of these HST's, taking care to alternate the shades of color on the petal parts. Repeat for the bottom row. Press these seams to the black strips.

Sew a black strip to either side of the yellow square. Press to the black strips. Lay this piece between the petal strips you just made and stitch. Press seams to the yellow square. Draw a diagonal line on the back of each of the white squares.. Place one over each corner of the block, RST, making sure the line on the back is aligned across the seam of the HST and stitch diagonally across the block, right on your drawn line. Fold out and press. Square up your blocks to 7 1/2" square and you are finished! You have 3 layers on each corner. Trim only the center layer down to 1/4", taking out that waste triangle. You will have the white triangle corner on the top layer and the bottom corner of the HST underneath.
You may make up to 2 poppies of the same fabrics for the BOM lottery. Enjoy!
