QAF Block of the Month

Big Bows

8 1/2" (unfinished), 8" (finished)

We often feature a star in December, but this December we are taking a departure and offering a Big Bow to tie up your packages. I can't remember doing a bow tie block before and thought you might enjoy making this easy block.

We are calling for colorful Jewel-tone Prints, and even can even have metallic on the fabric, just for this BOM. Pair them with white (no WOW). You can use one of the Moda or Kona whites, or even bleached muslin will do.

We hope you will love making these so much you will make lots. You may make up to 2 per fabric, then choose another one. The winner will have a gorgeous, scrappy and bright quilt to work on after the holidays.

For each block, cut:

Colorful Fabric:

(2) 4 1/2" squares
(2) 2 1/2" squares

White Fabric:

(2) 4 1/2" squares

To assemble Block:

First prepare your pieced squares by marking a diagonal line corner to corner on the back of your two smaller Colorful squares. Place these squares RST with the white squares, lining them up even with one corner, so that the line you drew would be crossing that corner. Sew ON THE LINE you drew. Now, fold the bright corner over the sewn line, to make sure it will be even with the other triangle and the corner of the white square. Press. Now, fold that triangle back and trim off the two pieces underneath, leaving 1/4". The resulting pieced square should measure 4 1/2" square at this point.

Now, lay out these squares with the two Colorful 4 1/2" squares, as per the picture above. Seam the top two together, then the bottom two. Press the seams in opposite directions, and finally, stitch the rows together. Be sure to trim with a square up ruler to 8 1/2". You are done!

Make and enter them early, since we all know how crazy busy December can be, and you won't want to miss your chance at this BOM!

Here are some ways to set these blocks:
