QAF Block of the Month

October 2009

Spool

9 1/2" (unfinished), 9" (finished)

October's block is the Spool. This is a very simple to make, fun block, in your favorites - BATIKS!!!! You will need one batik fabric, any color, print or plain, and one black fabric for each block. I recommend a good quality black fabric such as Kona cotton.

You may make up to 6 blocks for the drawing, but make them each different! Just imagine what a wonderful updated traditional quilt these blocks will make for the winner. Yummy.

For each block, cut:

Batik: (3) 3 1/2" squares and (2) 4" squares

Black: (2) 3 1/2" squares and (2) 4" squares

To assemble block:

First make the Half Square Triangles (HST): Make a diagonal line from corner to corner on the back of each of the batik 4" squares. Place them RST with the black 4" squares and stitch 1/4" on each side of the drawn line. Cut apart on the drawn line, press them open and trim with a small square up ruler to 3 1/2" square

Now lay out all your squares as in the picture above, stitch in them together into 3 rows. Press the top and bottom seams toward the center square and press the center seam toward the black squares. Now when you sew the rows together, those seams will nestle nicely together so you get nice, crisp intersections. Trim your block to 9 1/2" square with a 9 1/2" or larger square-up ruler.

Could these be any easier? Enter the max, you just might be the winner!!!

IMPORTANT NOTE: When you are squaring up your blocks, be sure to pay attention to where the inner seams of a block are on the ruler. You not only want your blocks square, you want them to measure up equally on each side of the center lines. This goes for all of our BOM's and swap blocks, and yes, it matters, especially when you make blocks for others. The management thanks you!

Here are a couple of layouts for you:
