QAF Block of the Month

September 2009

Grid 9Too

9 1/2" unfinished (9" finished)

For the start of Fall, (can you feel it in the air?), we are going to re-visit a block that is a little different, a nine patch that is definitely not symmetrical, but has great setting possibilities. You'll have a nice and scrappy quilt, whether or not you sash the blocks, and it will look more or less like plaid when you finish.

You will need one black solid and one white solid fabric. Kona cotton is a good bet for these. And you will need one tan TOT for each block, although you may make up to 2 blocks from each tan for the BOM lottery. If you make more, use another tan. The same black and white fabrics can be used throughout.

Cut for each block:

Black - (1) 2 1/2" square

White - (2) 2 1/2" squares and (2) 2 1/2" x 5 1/2" rectangles

Tan - Cut: (1) 2 1/2" square, (2) 2 1/2" x 5 1/2" rectangles and (1) 5 1/2" square

You may choose to strip piece these blocks, and if so, cut a strip of each separate piece and stitch them together as they appear in each row of the block.

For those of you making one or two blocks, lay out your pieces as per the picture above, and stitch them together by pairs, and press to the darker fabric. Your 4-patch section should measure 4 1/2" square before you apply the other strips to its side. Sew the strips for the bottom row together, pressing to the darker fabrics, and then stitch to the top part of the block. Square up to 9 1/2" and you're done.

Here are 3 different settings that Shaka came up with...the first is a straight set, the second on point with setting squares, and the third shows the blocks sashed for another interesting look.
