QAF Block of the Month

July 2009

Floral Fences

9 1/2" (unfinished), 9" (finished)

July's block is another 're-run' block, this time from last month. We thought it would be fun to do one of these using the florals and leafy greens we have been swapping. We are calling it Floral Fences. We also did this block in July 2004 with star fabrics.

You will need one med. yellow fabric, one small to medium print floral fabric - (or you could use one of those spring pastels we swapped, and and one medium green leafy or TOT fabric.

The blocks are quick to make, I promise.

For each block:

(1) strip 2" x 20 or so inches, a yellow fabric

(1) strip 2" x 20 or so inches, a floral fabric

(1) strip 2" x 20 or so inches, of a green fabric

Stitch the 3 strips together in the order given. Press all seams to one side. Your strip strata should measure 5" wide x 20 or so inches in length. Crosscut this strata to (4) 5" squares.

To Assemble Block:

Lay out the 4 squares so that the fabric with the yellow is to the center, aligning the strips as per the block shown above. Sew the top two together, press the seam in one direction, then the bottom two, pressing the seam in the opposite direction. Then sew the remaining seam, nestling the seams for a nice clean intersection. Press. Square up. Your block should measure 9 1/2" square to be entered in the BOM lottery.

You may enter six blocks in the Block of the Month lottery. Three may be of the same fabrics, then a different set should be used for the next three, or you can make each block different from all the rest if you'd rather. Maybe you will be a lucky winner of some fun and bright blocks. We hope you'll enjoy this one as much as you did last month's.
