QAF Block of the Month

June 2009

Red Rails

9 1/2" unfinished (9" finished)

June's block is a 're-run' block we are calling Red Rails. We did this block in July 2004 with star fabrics. This time we are calling for red and white fabrics.

You will need a white or WOW fabric, a Red on white fabric, and a White on red fabric.

The blocks are quick to make, I promise.

For each block:

(1) strip 2" x 20 or so inches, a White on red fabric

(1) strip 2" x 20 or so inches, a Red on white fabric

(1) strip 2" x 20 or so inches, of a white or WOW fabric

Stitch the 3 strips together in the order given. Press all seams to one side. Your strip strata should measure 5" wide x 20 or so inches in length. Crosscut this strata to (4) 5" squares.

To Assemble Block:

Lay out the 4 squares so that the fabric with the most red in it is to the center, aligning the strips as per the block shown above. Sew the top two together, press the seam in one direction, then the bottom two, pressing the seam in the opposite direction. Then sew the remaining seam, nestling the seams for a nice clean intersection. Press. Square up. Your block should measure 9 1/2" square to be entered in the BOM lottery.

You may enter three of them! Maybe you will be a lucky winner of some fun and bright blocks. They'd make great Patriotic blocks with blue sashing and/or borders! We hope you will have fun with this one.!
