QAF Block of the Month
March 2009
Puss in the Corner
10 1/2" (unfinished), 10"(finished)

Spring is almost here, so they tell me, despite a fall of snow here and there and icy winds. Brrrr! I just had a patio put in, and so I am thinking of the garden a lot lately. I have bulbs popping up everywhere, and that's my inspiration this month for this block. Coloring the Puss in the Corner block with spring-like pastels and a grassy green, maybe we can bring hopeful smiles to our faces, if not actual Spring in our gardens.
You can raid your scrap bags for these blocks - you will need 1 piece of a spring green and 4 different clear pastel fabrics. They can be TOT, including batiks, or can be small prints that 'read' like a clear pastel. If in doubt, look at the block and quilt pictures here, and/or ask on the forum. We are putting these together with a good quality muslin. This quilt will be a fresh look at a very traditional block.
As always, please use washed and pressed quilter's quality 100% cotton fabrics. You may make up to 3 blocks from the same group of fabrics, and you may enter up to 3 blocks in the BOM lottery.
Cut for each block:
(1) 5 1/2" square soft spring green
(4) 3" x 5 1/2" rectangles of muslin
(1) each 3" squares of (4) different clear pastel fabrics
To assemble block:
Lay out all the block pieces per the picture above. Stitch a 3" pastel square to each end of two of the muslin rectangles. Stitch two muslin rectangles to either side of the green square. Press each of these seams toward the colors. Stitch the 3 resulting strips together as above. Press the seams towards the top and bottom of the block. Square up your block to 10 1/2" and you are finished! Happy Spring!
Here is one setting you might consider - I think it makes an interesting secondary block where the sashings intersect, and also it looks something like a 'plaid' quilt!
