QAF Block of the Month

February 2009

Split Nine with a Twist

9 1/2" (unfinished), 9" (finished)

February's Block of the Month is based on the 9-patch. There are various names for it, like, Split Nine Patch, Nine Patch with a Twist or simply, Nine Patch. But whatever you call it, the best part about it, I think, is that you can set these blocks in most of the ways you can set a Log Cabin Quilt. A very versatile block!

We are doing it this time as a two-color scrappy block. You can get out your scrap bag for this one, or your 4" swapped strips (surely you have some of those!), in medium to dark blues and medium to light tans. Ideally you will use 6 different blues and 6 different tans, but if you'd like, you can use 3 of each, if you mix them up a little.

You may make 3 blocks to enter in the BOM, but feel free to use the pattern and make yourself a quilt too!

It's easy!

CUT for each Block:

Dark to medium blues:

(3) 4" squares and (3) 3 1/2" squares - You may use 3 to 6 fabrics, mix them up

Medium to light tans:

(3) 4" squares and (3) 3 1/2" squares - You may use 3 to 6 fabrics, mix them up

To Assemble Blocks:

Make Half Square Triangles (HST) first: Mark a diagonal line from corner to corner on the back of each 4" tan square. Match each RST with a Blue 4" square and stitch 1/4" on each side of the drawn line. Cut each apart on the drawn line and press to the dark. Repeat for the remaining 4" squares. Using your square up ruler, trim these to 3 1/2" square. (You will have 6 HST patches, and you only need 3 per block, so you may as well make two blocks, right?)

Now, lay out your block pieces per the picture above, noticing the orientation of each HST. Try to mix up the fabrics for that scrappy look. Sew together in rows first, then press the seams of the top and bottom rows toward the center plain square, and the seams of the middle row toward the outer squares. Then nestle those seams and sew the rows together. Press seams and square up to 9 1/2".

Here are some setting ideas for this block:
