QAF Block of the Month

November 2008

Layers

10 1/2" (unfinished), 10" (finished)

Hello everyone! Leaves are falling everywhere, even on QAF's Block of the Month. This month the block could not be easier. I have seen this type of 'block' in so many settings out of so many different fabrics, which is where I got my inspiration to do one for you with fallen leaves. I think the quilt that gets put together from these blocks will be really interesting, kind of like what you might see if all the leaves in your neighborhood got pushed all together, and the bricks are showing through.

You will need only two fabrics for this one, one Fall leaf fabric, and one rusty colored fabric. It can veer to the red, but be sure it doesn't go over to the bluish reds. Also, this fabric can be a lovely solid, or a TOT with no other color in it. We want it to set off these leaf fabrics. 3 strips of the same Fall leaf fabric and 2 strips of the rusty fabric will net you 3 blocks from one strip set. You'll have a chunk left over from which you could make, say, a potholder for a gift. Or, trim a tea towel. I bet you can think of lots of ways to use that piece up.

So, of course, you may make up to 3 blocks from the same leaf fabric. If you'd like to enter more, use another leaf fabric. You may use the same rusty fabric for all.

For each set of blocks:

Fall leaf fabric: (3) strips 2 1/2" x width of fabric, or at least 33" long (gives you room to straighten
your strata cuts)

Rusty-colored fabric: (2) strips 2 1/2" x width of fabric, or at least 33" long (gives you room to straighten your strata cuts)

To Assemble blocks:

Starting with a leaf fabric, stitch alternate strips together along the length of the fabrics. Alternate also which end you start sewing from, and you will avoid seams that want to curve. Press all the seams to one side. Your strata should measure 10 1/2" wide. Just on the odd chance it does not, you will need to figure out why, and re-sew. Crosscut into 10 1/2" segments. You will be able to get 3 of them with some strata left over. You may enter up to 3 with the same leaf fabric. If you'd like to enter more, choose a different leaf fabric. We hope you enter lots of leaves - this would make a nice bed quilt, we think.

Here is a sample layout, about 50" square. which only takes 25 blocks. An on-point layout would also look great.
