QAF Block of the Month
September 2008
Triangles
aka Ocean Wonder
10 1/2" (unfinished), 10" (finished)

This Block of the Month was designed in collaboration with Trina and Shaka, who stepped in with their suggestions and help when I suddenly realized the end of the month was upon me, and the BOM was not done!
We are calling for batiks the color of water for this one....ocean, lake, stream, canal, your backyard pond. You know, water! The girls will expand on color in the call for participation on the forum. You will also need solid black fabric to go with the batiks. Kona black goes quite well with batiks.
You will need ONE batik and the black for each block, and this one couldn't be easier.
Cut for each block:
Batik:
(1) 6 1/4" square and (1) 6" square
Black:
(1) 6 1/4" square and (1) 6" square
To assemble block:
Make Half Square Triangles (HST): Mark a diagonal line from corner to corner on the back of each black 6" square. Pair with the batik 6" square, RST, and stitch 1/4" on each side of the drawn line. Cut apart on the drawn line, press seam allowances to the black fabric. Now square up each pieced square to exactly 5 1/2" square, lining up your square up ruler with the diagonal on the sewn line.
Make Quarter Square Triangles
(QST): Mark a diagonal line from corner to corner on the back of each black
6
1/4" square from corner to
corner in both directions. Layer the black square RST with the 6 1/4" batik
square and sew
a
scant
1/4" on
both sides of ONE of those diagonal lines. The drawn lines are your cutting
lines.
Carefully
cut apart, cutting
FIRST on the line you didn't stitch beside, then cut apart on that drawn
line. You will have 4 units. Press to the black fabric.
Arrange the QST patches as per the picture above, and stitch the two halves of each QST together, nestling that center seam together for nice intersecting seams. Take care to not stretch this seam, you are dealing with some small bias edges here. Press the resulting seam to one side. Square up each of the resulting QST's to 5 1/2". This will take off all the little 'bunny ears', and if you took SCANT 1/4" seams, you will probably have little to trim, and they will measure correctly.
Now place the QST and the HST per
the picture above, taking care to orient the fabrics as shown. Stitch the
top two together, then the bottom two. Press the seam to the HST. Stitch
that last seam and that's it! EASY!
Square up your block to 10 1/2". Enter lots!
See some quilt layout ideas below. There are some color hints within these quilts, since we used actual batiks you can find in your LQS, thanks to Electric Quilt!
