Vintage Broken Dishes

10 1/2"(unfinished), 10" (finished)

Let's break some dishes this month! We call it 'Vintage Broken Dishes' because we are calling for 30's reproduction fabrics. This is a great, simple pattern, and we already know you love those 30's fabrics. I love that this block gives you that secondary pattern that makes it hard to see where the blocks begin and end.

You will need some yellow for the background. There are some yellows that are sold to go with the 30's reproduction fabrics. It will be a sort of lemony yellow, but still, a soft yellow. When you buy 30's fabrics, you usually see these great solids that go with them nearby in the stores. And you will need 4 different 30's fabrics. From 1 set of squares, you will get two blocks, so you won't waste any fabric at all. In fact, if you have to buy fabric, just get fat quarters.

For each block:

Cut (4) 6" squares from your yellow fabric

Cut (1) 6" square from EACH of your (4) 30's fabrics.

To assemble block:

Make half square triangles (HST): Mark a diagonal line from corner to corner on the back of each yellow square. Pair each with a 30's square, RST, and stitch 1/4" on each side of the drawn line. Cut apart on the drawn line, press seam allowances to the 30's fabric. Now square up each pieced square to exactly 5 1/2" square, lining up your square up ruler with the diagonal on the sewn line.

Lay your HST out, following the block picture above. Stitch the top two HST together, and press to the dark. Stitch the bottom two in the same way and press to the dark. Double check that they are laid out and stitched in the right configuration, line up the center seam and stitch. Press your seam flat, and square up to 10 1/2".

That's it, my friends! You may enter up to 4 with the same group of fabrics. You may make as many as you'd like to enter, but change your fabric sets after each 4. Have fun with this. These blocks will make a sweet little baby quilt or lap quilt for the winner.

Here's a little quilt layout:
