QAF Block of the Month
March 2008
Windmill
10 1/2" (unfinished), 10" (finished)

March is ushering in some windy weather for some of us, so a windmill block seems just right for the season. Here is a variation that we think you'll like. We've been talking about peach and brown together, and here's a chance to try this pretty color combo.
You will need one medium to dark brown and two peach fabrics. One of the peaches should be lighter than the other, and a TOT or solid, for the background. The other one should be slightly darker, and it would be o.k. if this one had a very small print, or could be TOT. Don't go orangey or rosy here, try to stay peachy. I will post a picture of my test block on the forum, so you can see.
This is a very easy block to piece, but you do need to pay attention to your 1/4" seams and match all the intersections when you are sewing the final block. But trust me, it's easy and fun to piece!
Cut for each block:
Brown:
(2) 3 1/2" squares (for the HST)
Lighter Peach:
(2) 3 1/2" squares (for the HST)
(4) 3" x 5 1/2" rectanglesDarker Peach:
(4) 3" squares
To Assemble Block:
First, make the Half Square Triangle (HST) patches. Draw a line diagonally from corner to corner on the back of one of the lighter peach squares. Layer it right sides together with one of the brown squares. Stitch a scant 1/4" from each side of the drawn line. Cut apart on the drawn line, press to the brown side. Repeat for the other 3 sets of 3 1/2" squares. Square these patches to 3", lining up the diagonal sewn lines with the diagonal line of your square up ruler.
You will use one of the rectangles, one HST square and one darker peach square to make a pieced block just like this one.

Stitch the HST and the darker peach square together first. Press to the peach square. Measure this piece - it should measure 3" x 5 1/2". Then stitch this piece to the rectangle. Press seam away from the rectangle.
REPEAT 3 more times with the remaining pieces. Each of the four sections of the block is made exactly the same.
Now lay out the 4 sections, paying close attention to the orientation in the finished block, up at the top of the page. Match up the intersections as you sew - sew the top two together and press in one direction, sew the bottom two together and press in the other direction. All the seams should nestle nicely if you pressed per the instructions. Stitch the final seam matching that final intersection and press. Square up your block to 10 1/2" and you are finished.
Hope you love making this block. Make many, you just might win them all!!!
Here are a couple of settings for these blocks:
