QAF Block of the Month
February 2008
Ring
10 1/2" (unfinished), 10" (finished)

February's block is in the ever-popular yellows and blues......we are calling it 'Ring' because it's February. We could have done a heart - but we've done that. <g> We could have called it Donut, just as well...but Ring had a nice ring to it.
Actually, this block evolved from a block called True Lover's Knot, which is 4 bowties set in a ring. We didn't think you would want to do those set in seams, so we modified that one in favor of this block. We hope you like it. We KNOW you like blue and yellow together!
So, for one block you will need one white or WOW, two different blues - make them light to medium, and two yellows, also light to medium. As you can see from the picture, we veered slightly to the aqua on one of these, and even toward the golds. Ideally, your fabrics should be more blue than aqua, and more yellow than gold.....and this time, they can be TOT (tone on tones) OR a small print with bits of other color in them. Backgrounds stay blue and yellow though. See the quilt example below for some fabric ideas.
Cut for each block:
White:
(4) 3 1/2" squares (for the HST)
Blue #1 and Blue #2 and Yellow #1 and Yellow#2:
from each of these fabrics cut
(1) 3 1/2" square (for HST)
(2) 3" squares
To Assemble Block:
First, make the Half Square Triangle patches. Draw a line diagonally from corner to corner on the back of the white 3 1/2" square. Layer it right sides together with one of your blue squares. Stitch a scant 1/4" from each side of the drawn line. Cut apart on the drawn line, press to the dark. Square this patch to 3", lining up the diagonal sewn line of the block with the diagonal line of your ruler.
Repeat these steps for each of the remaining 3 1/2" squares, one of each fabric. You will have two HST patches of each of your blue and yellow fabrics.
Lay out these patches with the plain squares, referring to the picture above. You can stitch them in 4-patches if you like that method, and if you do, please square each of them up to 5 1/2". Or, you may want to sew them together in rows. If so, the length of each row will measure 10 1/2".
Stitch the results together to make your
block. Please notice that the blues are set diagonally from each other,
ditto the yellows. When these are set
together in a quilt, you will see nice diagonal rows of blues and yellows,
all very scrappy and wonderful together. Square up your blocks to 10 1/2"
and you are done! Have fun. You may make up to 3 of each set of fabrics for
the BOM lottery. But you make make as many as you like and enter them, just
use different sets of fabrics. Have fun with this!!
