QAF Block of the Month

January 2008

Modified Patience Corner

10 1/2" (unfinished), 10" (finished)

We are starting out the new year with a fresh new block, in a new (to us) size, and with bright and cheerful fabrics in primary colors. We really hope you like it!

You will need a tiny bit of medium blue TOT, a bit of medium to bright yellow TOT, a cream or muslin background, and a red print. Your red print may have some blue and/or yellow in it, but be primarily red. It should not have much, if any white in it. Or, you could use a red TOT if you like. The blue and yellow fabrics you use should blend with any colors in the red fabric. I will put up a picture of a 'real-life' block depicting these types of fabrics in case this isn't clear.

Cut for each block:

Cream or muslin:

(2) 4" squares
(1) 6" square

Red print:

(1) 6" square

Blue TOT:

(2) 2" x 4" rectangles

Yellow TOT:

(2) 2" x 5 1/2" rectangles

To Assemble Block:

First, make the Half Square Triangle patches. Draw a line diagonally from corner to corner on the back of the cream 6" square. Layer it right sides together with the Red print square. Stitch a scant 1/4" from each side of the drawn line. Cut apart on the drawn line, press to the dark. Square this patch to 5 1/2", lining up the diagonal sewn line of the block with the diagonal line of your ruler.

Next, stitch a blue strip to one side of each of the two 4" cream squares. I found that it was a good idea to then measure this patch, as my scant seams may have been too scant. I needed to cut off a sliver from the side of the square opposite the seam. When this part is sewn, the blue should measure 1 3/4" wide, and the cream should measure 3 3/4" wide, and the whole patch at this point should measure 4" x 5 1/2".

Then, lay out this patch with the yellow strip. The blue should be on top with the yellow to the left. If in doubt, follow the picture above. Stitch together, press to the yellow. Repeat for the other yellow strip.

Now lay out your block and sew the top two pieced patches together, press to the red. Repeat for the bottom, then sew the final seam, paying attention all the while to the picture of the block, above.

I love the way the corners look entertwined on this quilt!

You may make up to 2 of this block in the same red, but could use the yellows, cream and blues more than that if you want to make lots.

Enjoy this easy, first block of the year!

Here is one way to set these blocks - see the 'hidden' stars? See the secondary woven blocks within them? Secondary images all over the place!!!!!
