QAF Block of the Month

February 2007

Contrary Wife

9 1/2" (unfinished), 9" (finished)

QAF's February block is a little tongue-in-cheek in honor of Valentine's Day. It's called Contrary Wife. There are other names for this block, depending on where you find it, one such is named Cheerful Child. It is a simple block, one of the 4 for this year that will have a definite diagonal look.

For the BOM you will need 3 fabrics. One bright red TOT, one fabric that is white with a red print, and one good quality white, such as Kona Cotton, bleached muslin, or a white on white (WOW), all 100% quilter's quality cotton, washed and pressed.

Cut for each block:

Red TOT:

(2) 4" squares

Red and White print:

(5) 3 1/2" squares

White or WOW:

(2) 4" squares

To Assemble Block:

First make the 4 Half Square Triangles (HST). Mark a diagonal line from corner to corner on the back of the two white squares. Place them each on a Red TOT square, RST. Stitch 1/4 on each side of the diagonal lines. Cut apart on the drawn lines. Press triangles open, seam to the red. Square them up to 3 1/2" square, lining up the diagonal line of the ruler on the seam line.

Now lay out all your patches as per the picture above, taking care to place the red triangles in the proper configuration. Stitch the squares together in rows. Press the seams of the top and bottom rows away from the center, and the seams of the center row toward the center. Now stitch the rows together. The seams should nest together nicely. And the sewing is done!!!!! Square up your block to 9 1/2". We hope you like this block and enter lots of them!

Here are a couple of setting suggestions for these blocks, and one table runner:
