QAF Block of the Month

January 2007

Glorified Nine Patch

9 1/2" (unfinished), 9" (finished)

QAF is rolling out a new year's worth of BOM blocks that will all be 9" blocks. This month's block is called the Glorified Nine Patch. It uses 4 little 9 patch blocks, 4 (almost) rail fence patches, and one plain square. I am showing it in Moda's Gingham Rose line of fabrics.

For this BOM, you will need one little print with a light background, could be a calico, or a very small floral. You will also need a background cream TOT, another light TOT that goes well with the background and the floral, and a bright TOT to set off the print in the floral. Remember, you'll want a little floral that has color, but also a lot of background showing, like the one in this block. Except for the cream, we are leaving the color up to you.

*TOT means tone on tone

Cut for each block:

Calico/small print:

(1) pc. 3 1/2" square
(4) pc. 3 1/2" x 2 1/2"
(4) pc. 1 1/2" square

Cream background:

(16) pc. 1 1/2" square

2nd Light TOT:

(4) pc. 3 1/2" x 1 1/2"

Bright TOT:

(16) pc. 1 1/2" square

To Assemble Block:

First lay out all the 1 1/2" squares as per the picture, and stitch the 9 patch blocks. Stitch squares together in rows, pressing to the dark, then stitch the rows together. You will have 4 identical little 9 patch blocks, and they should each square up to 3 1/2".

Next, make the (almost) rail fence patches. Stitch a 3 1/2" x 2 1/2" calico patch to one of the 2nd Light TOT 3 1/2" x 1 1/2" patches. Press to the TOT.

Now you can lay out the block and stitch together in rows. Press your block, square up to 9 1/2" and you are done!

It's a sweet block, don't you think? Make lots for the BOM, and stay tuned for more information about QAF's Sampler quilt challenge for 2007!!
